Ray Thompson was a barber for many years on Church Street in Canajoharie.
A local historian, he gave slide shows from his collection of postcards and photos.

The following notes were found in Ray's slide carousel boxes and are presented here unaltered.

Our Village of Canajoharie, N.Y.

Roof's Tavern built late 1700 was stopping off place for coaches, lines from Cobleskill, Cherry Valley, Utica, Schenectady. Closed 1826 when Reuben Peake built a new hotel in front of the Roof Tavern. Then 1888 Mr. Wagner built the Hotel Wagner later bought by Beech-Nut.

Bridge Across Creek
The first bridge across the creek was built in 1801 but fell in.
The second bridge, built in 1804, was washed away in the Spring of 1833 by high water.
The third bridge, a covered bridge, was built and stood until Jan 10th 1901, a cold day, destroyed by fire.
A Mr. Rutishauser was the last man to drive across the covered bridge, the father of Chester and {illegible}
A catwalk was built between Canajoharie and Palatine Bridge after the Jan 10 fire.


Canal
The Clinton Ditch was started in 1801
Open in 1825
Rebuilt in 1835
The canal was 41 feet wide on top, 28 feet at bottom, and only 4 feet deep.
Canajoharie was a large grain business, bringing grain from Oneonta, Cobleskill, Cherry Valley and other places to be ship by boat.

Did you know
The first newspaper in Montgomery County established at Fort Plain in 1827 by S.M.S.Gant was called the Fort Plain Watch Tower.

Canajoharie Incorporated
The village was incorporated July 14th 1829. On that day the village voted $150 to buy a pumper engine for the fire Co's.
Then in 1831 the village contracted for a cemetery.
The horse drawn hearse was owned by the Village of Canajoharie.

Did You Know
On April 21 1830 the Canajoharie Cobleskill Railroad was incorporated but only 22 miles of road was built.

Spraker Bank was built 1840.

Fire 1840
Nov. 19 1840 The Big Fire. All buildings on both sides of Church and some on Mohawk to the covered bridge across the Canjo Creek a tot. 60 buildens {sic}. Forty families made homeless. Prop lost 1500.00

The Kirby House or tavern corner Main and Church was built in 1860. Destroyed by the big fire in 1877. The Mohawk Hotel was built after the fire. The building still stands 1990. Now Don's Electric and Plumbing.

Water Works
The first water works were built 1852 and extended 1876.
In 1881 a rival co. started another water works. A fight was on until 1889 3 years {sic}. When the two companies combined in 1902 a water main was built with lots of water pressure for homes and fire. Still in use [1990].


Fire 1877
April 29 1877 A fire swept the village burned all buildings from Main Street to the Canal. The canal then going though the center of Village of Canajoharie.

Churches
Lutheran built 1869 Rev Baum.
Dutch reformed built 1842 Rev James.
Methodist built 1863 Rev ? This church was destroyed by fire Jan 14, 1914.
St. John built 1871 Rev. ?
Episcopal built 1873 Rev. Townsend, built by the White family.
Catholic built 1862 Father Clark.

Was started 1884 to 1904 was in a room in the school
