Lock 14: Canajoharie-Palatine Bridge

Opened in 1825, the Erie Canal was the first great public works project of the young country and propelled New York to prominence by opening up markets to the west. The original canal was four feet deep and forty feet wide, and a crew consisted of a man, a boy and a mule. "Clinton's Ditch" was an immediate success. The Erie Canal has given way to the New York Barge Canal and is used today primarily for recreational boating. Lock 14 is just west of Riverfront Park. Boats waiting for the lock may dock at the park. It's a one block walk to the library and two blocks to the info booth.
